BENTHAM family of Standish

Postby Radbod » Fri Sep 08, 2006 1:01 pm

Hi All :D

I am searching for any info on James Bentham and Betty Winstanley both born around 1799 and married around 1822. They lived on Engine Row in Standish in 1841.

Thanks

Bentham family

Postby huntfam » Fri Dec 01, 2006 1:43 pm

Hi Mike,
I have a Henry Bentham (b.c1801) in my family tree - he married Mary Hunt in about 1827 - any relation do you think?

The Benthams

Postby Lynnemudge » Sat Feb 10, 2007 8:07 pm

Hi,

I am researching the Benthams particularly the family of John and Elizabeth Bentham. James may have been a brother of Johns. The Bentham family (mine) also lived on Engine Row at some point.
My great great grandfather was Thomas who was a blacksmith; he married firstly Amelia Winrow who died in childbirth and then Ellen Challenor. They moved to Yorkshire for work about 1855.
I know Thomas's father was John Bentham an underlooker in the pit; I suspect his mother was Elizabeth, not Betty, as he named his first daughter Elizabeth. I have been unable to find out who John's father was. Who is your James's father?

The Benthams

Postby Lynnemudge » Sun Feb 25, 2007 6:54 pm

Hallo Radbod

The search and records facilities on the Lancashire OPC will probably help with finding out about James Bentham. As you will be aware there were many Thomas's, James's and John's around at that time.
Do you know James's parents?

Bentham Family

Postby Brian Bentham » Fri Mar 16, 2007 9:52 am

Hello

I am Brian Bentham and I have spent many hours over the last few years researching my family tree - I used information my late father gave me + Census data and I have visited Parbold. I grew up in Leigh & I know we have links with Parbold, Standish & Horwich. There is a message from Beryl to Stephanie Finch (dated 8/12/04) which particularly interests me because I know we are related and that is one side of the tree that has many missing links. Definite links are to William Bentham of Parbold (1776-1855) (possibly John before him) who had 4 sons Henry (m Alice), William (m Margery), Peter (m Ellen) + Joseph & a daughter Mary.

Anybody out there willing to exchange information???

Thanks
Brian Bentham

Hi,

Saw the post and had to join the message board.
I'm an ex-pat Standisher born in Church Street. My Mum's maiden name was Bentham and many of my aunts still live there. This branch of the Bentham's were Shevington based and my grandparents grave is in that cemetery.
My surname is Aspinall and appears to be concentrated in the area of Standish. As I grew up as a child unrelated Aspinalls' ran the grocery, the hardware store and the post office. When I moved to the South Midlands 23 years ago we were the only Aspinall in the phonebook!

Hi All

In the 1841 census I have my Gt Gt Gt Granparents James and Elizabeth (Betty) Barker. Betty's maiden name was Bentham and she was born in 1803, her parents were James Bentham and Ellen Lythgoe.

In 1841 James & Betty were living in Engine Row with 2 daughters Ann & Mary and Betty's illegitamate 12 year old son John Bentham.

James Bentham & Ellen Lythgoe were married 8 April 1799 at St Wilfrid's, their children were -

Ann baptised 12 Jan 1800
John baptised 25 Dec 1801
Elizabeth baptised 13 Nov 1803
Sarah baptised 27 May 1807
William baptised 23 April 1809
Henry baptised 29 June 1811

Please get in touch if you think they may be related.

Thanks
Al
