Hi:

My name is Eric Simm.
I live on Cape Breton Island in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada

I am doing some research on my great grandfather / great grandmother whom I believe came from Standish,Wigan,England (Late 1800's)
I am hoping that the recipient of this email may be able to suggest some avenues I may pursue in order for me to locate information on any of my long lost relatives.

What I know is that brothers Robert (Bob) Simm, Ernest Jubilee Simm and John (Jack) Simm came to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Canada in early 1900's before WWI

These men were the sons of James Simm and Elizabeth Dandy who I believe remained in Standish, Wigan,England.

James Simm may have had 2 wives
his first was a Mary Turner- they had one child (William????- Not Sure)
his second Elizabeth Dandy who was the mother of Robert, Ernest, John and possibly another son and daughter

Children of James Simm & Elizabeth Dandy:
Robert Simm married Amelia Howarth Nov 6 1913, in Florence, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada and moved to Flint Michigan, United States

John (Jack) Simm also moved to Flint Michigan, United States

Ernest Jubilee Simm married Claire Hale Aug 30 1915 in Florence, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada -
Claire Hale (born in Frampton England) daughter of Robert Hale and Adeline (nee harris) immigrated in 1908 to Canada

Ernest Jubilee Simm served and was wounded in World War 1 in Europe
Ernest and Clarie had 3 sons and a daughter
Ernest age 40 died Apr 23 1928 in Florence, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada

Any information, direction or contact on the Wigan connection would be most appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

Sincerely Yours

Eric Simm

Eric I am very interested in your query which will become apparent in a moment.

I have found 2 James Simms in 1881 living in Standish and as you don't say how old he was only that a son of his second marriage married in Canada after 1910 it could be either are your man.

You perhaps may know what he did for a living which would help clarify which James he was. Was he a miner or a shoe maker?

George SIMM Unmarried 1 year Male born Standish, Lancashire, England Son
William CROOK Unmarried 43 years Male born Turton, Lancashire, England Lodger Coal Miner

The other family is much more interesting to me personally, this James is not yet married and living with his widowed mother

My interest here is my grandfather Charles Daniel Turner lived in this house from 1908 and the house remained with the family until 1998 when my aunt died. His family lived in Wrightington before moving to Shevington Moor where my mother was born in 1904 then they moved to Baxter Street then to High Street. My mother's cousin married William Simm. and they lived in School Lane until his death in the 1970s.

Very interesting your Simms are married to Turners and even stranger that there is a James Simm living in what was later to become the Turner home.

I'm digging deep into my memory banks but in the '60's there was definitely a Simm's (I think undertakers) on Preston Road immediately before the Methodist Church. They were also a collection point for coach trips and I still remember many of our jaunts to Wales, Stratford-on-Avon etc. Ironic to think that I live only ten miles from Stratford now.
